Possible Future Renumbering for More Large Cities

Note that the designations listed hereunder should now be regarded as merely of historical interest.
The majority of designations listed here had already been superseded by *different* designations in more recent issues of the Specified Numbering Scheme as part of plans for individual geographical areas, while the remaining designations herein were removed in the issue of the OFTEL Specified Numbering Scheme dated 17 April 2001.

Changes in issues of the OFTEL Specified Numbering Scheme dated 24 January 2000 and 15 February 2000 presumably herald the way for another round of numbering changes in the cities previously identified as facing number exhaustion by the year 2005 (see OFTEL Numbering Bulletin 26):

However, no formal announcements have yet been made regarding this renumbering, and OFTEL have indicated that no changes will take place without public consulation, so please do not assume that that renumbering will take place as indicated, or, indeed, at all.

DE digits "21" have been "designated" in the 01202 area (Bournemouth), while both "21" *and* "22" have been "designated" in adjacent areas

DE digits "79" have been "designated" in the 01223 area (Cambridge), while both "79" *and* "81" have been "designated" in adjacent areas

DE digits "51" have been "designated" in the 01224 area (Aberdeen), while both "51" *and* "52" have been "designated" in adjacent areas

DE digits "65" have been "designated" in the 01273 area (Brighton), while both "65" *and* "67" have been "designated" in adjacent areas

DE digits "79" have been "designated" in the 01274 area (Bradford), while both "79" *and* "76" have been "designated" in adjacent areas

DE digits "42" have been "designated" in the 01332 area (Derby), while both "42" *and* "43" have been "designated" in adjacent areas

DE digits "90" and "91" have been "designated" in areas adjacent to 01483 (Guildford)

DE digits "90" and "91" have been "designated" in areas adjacent to 01642 (Middlesbrough)

DE digits "91" and "92" have been "designated" in areas adjacent to 01772 (Preston)

DE digits "49" have been "designated" in the 01782 area (Stoke-on-Trent), while both "49" *and* "43" have been "designated" in adjacent areas

DE digits "49" have been "designated" in the 01865 area (Oxford), while both "49" *and* "48" have been "designated" in adjacent areas

DE digits "90" and "91" have been "designated" in areas adjacent to 01902 (Wolverhampton)

DE digits "81" (and "80") have been "designated" in areas adjacent to 01942 (Wigan)

In addition, DE digits "80" have been "designated" (for what purpose?) in all(?) areas where they were previously "free", and "90" to "98" inclusive have been "designated" in the majority of areas where thre were not already designated.

The designations in the "adjacent areas",are dated "01/2000" (except for "79" adacent to Cambridge, which was dated "02/2000"), whereas the designations in the cities themselves are dated "02/2000".

Presumably this is paving the way for eight digit numbering to be introduced in these areas, but any official announcement is likely to be delayed until well after the completion of the Big Number changes, to avoid (more) confusion. Is it possible to deduce the new 02x area codes for these cities?

Also DE digits "75" and "76" have been "designated" in areas adjacent to Coventry, while "37" has been "designated" in areas adjacent to Southampton, and "92 and "93" have been "designated" in areas adjacent to Portsmouth. These correspond to {024) 75xx xxxx, (023) 37xx xxxx and (023) 93xx xxxx which are the ranges already allocated for expansion in the Coventry and Southampton areas respectively.
